Abstract
307,521. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Nov. 2, 1927. Radiations, treating substances with. - In effecting reactions in gases, to which metallic vapour has been added, by treatment with radiations from an electrical discharge in metallic vapour, the gas is repeatedly exposed to the radiations, the time of each exposure being limited to prevent the initiation of secondary reactions. The reaction products are continuously removed from the circulating gas. Improved results are obtained by first removing impurities which retard the reaction, and by employing increased pressure. Several examples of procedure are given, of which the following are typical :-(1) a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen is freed from oxygen and moisture and after being charged with mercury vapour is passed with a velocity of 90 ccm. per second through a cylindrical chamber of 3 litres capacity containing a mercury-vapour lamp 50 cm. in length. After each exposure the formaldehyde produced is removed and the gases are recirculated: (2) hydrogen with a small addition of oxygen is charged with mercury vapour or irradiated. The hydrogen peroxide produced is continuously removed by a spray of water.
