Abstract

A catalyst for the vapour phase dehydrogenation of methanol to form methyl formate is prepared by forming small discrete cavernous granules of an alloy containing copper as the principal constituent and then etching the granules with caustic soda, caustic potash or other alkali to dissolve the constituents other than copper, such as aluminium, from at least the outer surface, the treated granules being maintained out of contact with air until the time of use. The spent catalyst may be regenerated by treatment with alkali.ALSO:The vapour-phase dehydrogenation of methanol to form methyl formate is effected in the presence of a catalyst prepared by forming small discrete cavernous granules of an alloy containing copper as the principal constituent and then etching the granules with alkali to dissolve the constituents other than copper from at least the outer surface.
