Abstract

Pyrazine is made by vapour phase dehydrogenation of piperazine in presence of a dehydrogenation catalyst such as copper, nickel, and oxides of zinc or cadmium, alone or together with one another or with chromic oxide. Carriers of neutral or basic character such as cement or oxides and carbonates of alkaline earth metals or magnesium may be used. Temperature is 250-550, preferably 300-450 DEG C., at atmospheric or reduced pressure. The piperazine may be diluted with inert gases such as steam or nitrogen. The catalyst can be regenerated by air oxidation, followed by reduction. In examples: (1) copper oxide pellets are reduced in hydrogen, and piperazine vapour and steam passed over at 440 DEG C.; (2) a catalyst prepared by precipitation with soda from a solution of copper and cadmium nitrates in presence of magnesia, impregnation with potassium carbonate, pelleting with cement, and drying, is treated with hydrogen at 300-350 DEG C., and then used at 335-345 DEG C. as in (1). Specification 387,507 is referred to.
