Abstract

A catalyst for the oxidation of olefines to unsaturated aldehydes comprises cupric oxide and elementary selenium or silica gel. Admixture of selenium with the cupric oxide-silica gel mixture may be effected by the decomposition of metal selenides, e.g. of silver, antimony or cobalt, under the catalytic reaction conditions or alternatively by passing selenium vapour in admixture with the reactant gases over the cupric oxide-silica gel mixture. The mixture of cupric oxide and silica gel is preferably heated to 600 DEG C., and then heated to 250-350 DEG C. in the presence of an olefine-oxygen mixture prior to admission of the selenium.
