Abstract

2-Methylvaleraldehyde is produced by contacting propionaldehyde and hydrogen, in the vapour phase and at an elevated temperature with a catalyst comprising an aldolisation/dehydration catalyst and a palladium catalyst. The two components of the catalyst may be mixed together, used separately or together in conjunction with an inert support, e.g. carbon. When used separately the gases are first passed over the aldolisation/dehydration catalyst and then over the palladium catalyst. The aldolisation catalyst may be alumina, silica-alumina, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, an alkali metal hydroxide, an alkaline salt of an alkali metal, or mixtures of two or more of these compounds. These compounds may be in a suitable form to act as support for the palladium catalyst. The reaction temperature may be from 100 DEG to 350 DEG C. An inert diluent, e.g. nitrogen may be present.
