Abstract
Cobalt-silicon foraminate catalysts are prepared by treating an alloy in which the ratio by weight of cobalt: silicon is from 30 : 70 to 85 : 15, with aqueous alkali to remove not more than 70 per cent of the original silicon content. The alloy is prepared from a melt by rapid cooling and broken up into granules between 1/16 and 1 inch. An aqueous solution containing 5 to 50 per cent by weight of caustic soda is used at 100 DEG to 130 DEG C. If not washed out the alkali may be used as a promoter for the catalyst. The catalysts can be used for hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, hydrogenolysis and reductive amination. They are regenerated by oxidation and reduction.ALSO:Cobalt-silicon alloys containing cobalt and silicon in the ratio 30 : 70 to 85 : 15 by weight are treated with aqueous alkali at 100 DEG to 130 DEG C. to remove part of the silicon.
