Abstract
Foraminate cobalt aluminium catalysts are prepared by treating an alloy of cobalt and aluminium in relative proportion by weight of from 15 : 85 to 55 : 45 with an aqueous sodium or potassium hydroxide or carbonate or mixtures thereof so as to remove a portion at least of the aluminium from the surface and neighbouring regions. The amount of aluminium extracted may be from 0.5 to 70 per cent by weight of it originally present in the alloy. Reactivation of the catalyst is obtained by further repeated treatments with the alkaline extraction medium until the 70 per cent aluminium has been extracted. The catalyst may be used in hydrogenating dehydrogenating, hydrogenalysis and reductive amination processes. Minor proportions of other metals may be present in the original alloy.
