Abstract

Water-soluble acetylenic alcohols are selectively hydrogenated to olefinic alcohols in the presence of a palladium-base catalyst, if desired on a catalyst support, and in the presence of an aqueous solution of a zinc salt in which the amount of zinc salt is between 0.01% and 5.0% by weight based on the weight of the acetylenic alcohol. Ammonia or an amine may additionally be present in an amount not higher than 0.5% by weight based on the weight of the acetylenic alcohol. Examples are given.
