Abstract
A foraminate copper-nickel-aluminium catalyst for the hydrogenation of olefines, diolefines and acetylenes is prepared by treating pieces of a copper-nickel-aluminium alloy containing 40-60 per cent aluminium with aqueous caustic alkali to extract part, preferably not more than 70 per cent, of the aluminium. Extraction temperatures of atmospheric to 100 DEG C. may be employed and the aqueous alkali, e.g. caustic soda, is preferably passed over the pieces of alloy at a space velocity greater than 10. The extracted alloy is finally washed with water. The catalyst may be reactivated by further treatment with aqueous alkali.
