Abstract
Polyolefines, such as polyethylene, produced by the low pressure process are purified by pretreating the suspension with an alkylene oxide at moderature temperature, prior to working up in known manner. The polymers may be produced in C4 to C12 aliphatic or hydroaromatic hydrocarbons, such as ethyl cyclohexane, using catalysts consisting of mixtures of Group IVa, Va or VIa metal compounds with aluminium, aluminium hydride or organic compounds of aluminium, magnesium, zinc or the alkali metals, such as a mixture from aluminium triisobutyl and titanium tetrachloride. Alkylene oxides specified are ethylene and propylene oxides. The working up in known manner may comprise treatment with anhydrous alcohol, alcoholic or aqueous mineral or complex forming organic acid, or liquid, organic, oxygen containing compounds such as acetone; followed by washing with water.
