Abstract

A catalyst used for polymerizing ethylene is formed by mixing (A) a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal compound with (B) at least one of (i) alkali metal alkyls or aralkyls; (ii) complexes of (i) with organic compounds of Al, Mg or Zn; (iii) complexes of organic compounds of Al, Mg or Zn with an alkali metal hydride; (iv) complexes containing at least two different metals and formed from organic compounds of Al, Mg or Zn and, optionally, with (C) an organic compound of Mg, Zn or Al. Other details of the Specification are as disclosed in Specifications 799,392, 799,823 and the parent Specification, with the addition that the following catalyst components are specified, viz.: lithium, sodium and potassium methyls, ethyls, propyls, benzyls and isobutyls, lithium butyl, NaAlEt4, NaAlMe4, NaAl(C12H25)4, NaAlBu3H, NaAl (C6H5)3H, LiAlMe2H2, KAl(C6H13)4 and MgAlEt4. Specification 794,359 also is referred to.ALSO:Ethylene is polymerized using a catalyst formed by mixing (A) a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal compound with (B) at least one of: (i) alkali metal alkyls or aralkyls, (ii) complexes of (i) with organic compounds of Al, Mg or Zn, (iii) complexes of organic compounds of Al, Mg of Zn with an alkali metal hydride, (iv) complexes containing at least two different metals and formed from organic compounds of Al, Mg or Zn, and, optionally, with (C) an organic compound of Mg, Zn or Al. Other details of the Specification are as disclosed in Specifications 799,392, 799,823 and the parent Specification and with the addition that purification of polymer using butanolic hydrochloric acid is described, and the use of the following catalyst components is disclosed, viz., lithium, sodium and potassium methyls, ethyls, propyls, benzyls and isobutyls, lithium butyl, NaAlEt4, NaAlMe4, NaAl(C12H25)4, NaAlBu3, NaAl(C6H5)3H, LiAlMe2H2, KAl(C6H13)4 and MgAlEt4.
