Abstract

Crystalline polymers of acrylamide derivatives wherein the acrylamide molecule bears on the nitrogen atom two monovalent hydrocarbon radical substituents which contain a total of at least 5 carbon atoms and are saturated except for aromatic unsaturation, or said nitrogen atom forms part of a saturated heterocyclic ring which may contain a second heteroatom, namely oxygen or nitrogen bearing an alkyl group, and is optionally substituted by alkyl, may be prepared by polymerization in an inert liquid hydrocarbon in the presence of a catalyst which is an organometallic compound, hydride or complex hydride containing a metal of Group I or II of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table, an alkali metal amide or a complex formed by the addition reaction of an alkali metal with an aromatic organic compound. The liquid hydrocarbon may be toluene, hexane or petroleum ether. Lists of suitable acrylamides and catalysts are given and examples describe the polymerization of N-methyl-Nphenyl acrylamide with (1) lithium ethyl, (2) lithium diethylamide, (3) sodium hydride, (4) lithium amide, (14) sodium boron triphenyl and (15) lithium benzophenone; N : N-diisobutyl acrylamide with (5) sodium hydride; N : N-di-nbutyl acrylamide with (6) sodium hydride and (16) sodium hydride and lithium aluminium hydride; N-acrylylmorpholine with (7) lithium borohydride; N-acrylylpiperidine with (8) lithium ethyl, (9) lithium aluminium ethyl triisobutyl, (11) sodium naphthalene, (12) lithium stilbene and (13) lithium azobenzene; and N : Ndicyclohexylacrylamide with (10) lithium naphthalene. The products may be formed into films, filaments or other shaped articles. U.S.A. Specification 2,494,583 is referred to.
