Abstract

Linear head-to-tail polymers of branchedchain alpha-olefins of formulae <FORM:0835759/IV (a)/1> where R1 is hydrogen or a linear alkyl group of one to three carbon atoms, and R2 is a linear alkyl group having one to three carbon atoms when R1 is an alkyl group and R2 is a branched alkyl group <FORM:0835759/IV (a)/2> (n = 0, 1 or 2 and R3 and R4 are each linear alkyls having one to five carbon atoms) when R1 is hydrogen and of molecular weight greater than 2000 are prepared by polymerization using a catalyst obtained by the reaction of a halide of a transition metal of the IV, V and VI Group of the Periodic System with a metalloalkyl compound of a metal of the II or II Group of the Periodic System. Specified alpha olefins are 3-methyl-but-1-ene, 4-methyl-pent-1 - ene, 4 - methyl - hex - 1 - ene, 5 - methylhex - 1 - ene. The polymers may be oily, amorphous, partly crystalline or highly crystalline; crystallizable polymers being obtained by extraction with solvents capable of dissolving the non-crystallizable amorphous polymer present.
