Abstract
Alcohols are prepared by the direct hydration of olefines in the presence of a catalyst prepared by treating pellets comprising tungstic acid with dry hydrogen chloride at 200 DEG -600 DEG C. (see Group III). In an example a liquid mixture of 1 part by weight propylene and 7 parts of water is passed over the catalyst at a temperature of 270 DEG C., a pressure of 250 atmospheres, and a rate of 3 litres per litre of catalyst space per hour; a product containing 8 per cent. isopropanol is obtained.ALSO:A catalyst of improved mechanical strength is prepared by treating pellets comprising tungstic acid with dry hydrogen chloride at 200 DEG -600 DEG C. The term "tungstic acid" is defined as a compound of the formula WO3, either anhydrous or hydrated. The pellets may be first heated in nitrogen, which is then replaced, at least in part, by the hydrogen chloride. Before use the catalyst may be reduced. The catalyst is suitable for the direct hydration of olefines, e.g. propylene to isopropanol (see Group IV (b)). Specifications 622,937 and 703,623 are referred to.
