Abstract

Foraminate catalysts of cobalt-zinc are prepared by treating an alloy thereof in which the ratio by weight cobalt: zinc is from 8 : 92 to 60 :440 with an extracting liquid to remove not more than 70 per cent by weight of the initial zinc content. Extracting liquids specified are caustic soda 5-40 per cent by weight, aqueous hydrochloric acid containing 5 to 35 per cent by weight, aqueous sulphuric acid, containing 5 to 50 per cent by weight, and according to the Provisional Specification acetic acid containing 5 per cent by weight, the treatment in all cases being carried out at 100 DEG C. The catalysts can be used for hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, hydrogenolysis and reductive amination, both in liquid and vapour phases.ALSO:Cobalt-zinc alloys (see Group II) are used for (a) hydrogenation, e.g. ethylene to ethane, acetylene to ethylene, benzene to cyclohexane, or butadiene to butene-2; (b) dehydrogenation, e.g. propane to propene, ethyl alcohol to acetaldehyde, ethylamine to acetomitrile, ethylene to acetylene, or butene-2 to butadiene; (c) hydrogenolysis, e.g. benzyl alcohol to toluene, furfural to sylvane, or cyclopropane to propane; and (d) reductive amination, e.g. acetaldehyde to ethylamine.ALSO:Cobalt-zinc alloys containing cobalt and zinc in the ratio 8 : 92 to 60 : 40 by weight have the zinc partially extracted with dilute aqueous solutions of caustic soda hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, or, according to the Provisional Specification, acetic acid, at a temperature of 100 DEG C.
