Abstract
331,482. Lebedev, S. V. Jan. 30, 1929. Diolefines and their bromine derivatives. Diolefines are obtained by heating alcohols, having a lower number of carbon atoms than the diolefine required, in the presence of a dehydrating catalyst and a dehydrogenating catalyst. Methyl, ethyl and propyl alcohols may be treated. The reaction is preferably carried out under reduced pressure, and the products cooled rapidly. In an example ethyl alcohol (95 per cent) is led through a quartz tube containing aluminium and zinc oxides at 400‹ C. and a quarter atmospheric pressure. The reaction products are passed through a condenser at 0‹ C. and thence into bromine. The bromides are then fractionally distilled, and the residual tetrabromide is converted into butadiene in a known manner, e.g. by reduction with zinc in alcoholic solution. Specification 17235/12 is referred to.
