Abstract
In the pyrolysis of liquid hydrocarbons to obtain gaseous olefins and a cracked gasoline, the latter is hydrogenated under conditions which hydrogenate the diolefins while leaving unchanged mono-olefins and aromatics, the aromatic compounds are removed and the non-aromatic material is recycled to the pyrolysis. The hydrogenation is effected over a palladium or nickel catalyst in the liquid, e.g. trickling, phase at below 100 DEG C. with palladium catalyst and below 200 DEG C. with nickel. The pressure may be 20-80 atmospheres. In a preferred embodiment material boiling below benzene, e.g. below 75 DEG C., is removed by distillation and recycled to the pyrolysis. The remainder is further hydrogenated to convert olefins to saturated materials without affecting aromatics e.g. in the liquid phase over cobalt molybdate or molybdena on alumina at 250-400 DEG C., 10-60 atmospheres and 0.5-3 kg. of feed per litre of catalyst per hour. Aromatics are separated, e.g. by solvent extraction with aqueous diethylene glycol, and recovered as a product and the raffinate is returned to the pyrolysis.
