Abstract

Acetylene polymers, such as divinylacetylene and ethinyl butadiene, are removed from crude acrylonitrile by treatment with strong sulphuric acid, neutralising any excess of sulphuric acid and separating the purified acrylonitrile. In the examples, crude acrylonitrile is treated with 100 per cent sulphuric acid at temperatures up to 45 DEG C., the mixture is neutralised with ammonia gas or ammonium hydroxide solution, the impurities are removed by filtration or decantation and the acrylonitrile is further purified by distillation.
