Abstract

Hydrocarbon oils or motor fuels are treated to remove "thiophene sulphur" with 0.25-0.4 per cent by volume of sulphuric acid of about 95 per cent strength at a temperature not exceeding 30 DEG C., and the mixture is gradually heated up to 60-70 DEG C. as the reaction proceeds. The acid may then be neutralized in situ or eliminated by adding an adsorbent to the mixture. An example is given of the treatment of coke-oven benzole. The process may be effected continuously.
