Abstract

Refined sugarcane wax containing combined chlorine is obtained by treating the crude wax, either as such or in solution in such solvents as carbon tetrachloride and ethylene dichloride, with chlorine in the presence of water. The water is preferably present in equimolecular proportions to the chlorine gas used, and if the wax is treated as such, the process is generally carried out at a temperature above the melting point of the wax, the product being thereafter obtained in granular form if allowed to cool with stirring. The reaction mixture itself is generally stirred and subjected to superatmospheric pressure, and if the wax is treated in solution, the wax is eventually recovered by removal of the solvent.ALSO:A process of refining sugarcane wax, comprises treating the wax, either as such or in solution in such solvents as carbon tetrachloride and ethylene dichloride, with chlorine in the presence of water. The water is preferably present in equimolecular proportions to the chlorine used, and if the wax is treated as such, the process is generally carried out at a temperature above the melting point of the wax, the product being thereafter obtained in granular form if it is allowed to cool while being stirred. The reaction mixture is generally stirred and subjected to superatmospheric pressure. If the wax is treated in solution, the wax is recovered after treatment by removal of the solvent. The wax obtained generally contains combined chlorine.
