Abstract

1.1.2-Trichlorethane is prepared by contact of chlorine with vinyl chloride kept liquid by pressure and at a temperature of 30-50, preferably 35-45 DEG C. Temperature may be controlled by adjusting the rate of feed of chlorine into the vinyl chloride which may be mixed with 1.1.2-trichlorethane, and cooling the reactor, the feed being stopped when the addition reaction is complete. Free chlorine may be removed by treating the products with, for example, cooled caustic soda solution prior to fractionation. In examples, chlorine is fed below the surface of vinyl chloride in an autoclave so that the temperature is maintained at 40 DEG C., 1.1.2-trichlorethane being recovered by fractionation either with or without a prior caustic soda wash.
