Abstract
Alkyl sulphochlorides such as decylic or dodecylic sulphochloride are saponified and the products are purified, by a process in which alkyl sulphochlorides are heated with a solution of an alkali metal carbonate at a temperature above 100 DEG C. under pressure with simultaneous introduction of steam and the unsaponifiable matter is distilled off into a vacuum vessel, the carbonic acid being allowed to escape simultaneously. The invention is carried out by heating a solution of the alkali metal carbonate in an autoclave to a temperature above 100 DEG C., introducing the alkyl sulphochloride by means of a pump. Steam is then introduced, causing carbonic acid to be driven off and the unsaponifiable constituents are distilled into a vacuum vessel. The alkali metal chloride may be separated from the product by so adjusting the concentration that on cooling the contents of the autoclave the alkali metal chloride separates and may be removed by filtration or centrifuging. In an example an alkyl sulphochloride is saponified with ammonia soda by the above process giving an alkyl sulphonate solution.
