[Class 138 (i)] In a modification of the process described and claimed in the parent Specification, the bottles sterilized by hot steam are brought to a lower temperature after leaving the steam chamber by being cooled in stages by sterile water at different temperatures. In the construction shown; the bottles carried in baskets 5 on an endless conveyer pass upwardly through zones 3a, 3b, 3c in which they are sterilized by steam, the temperature of which is hottest in the highest zone 3c. On the downward journey the bottles move into zones 3d, 3e of increasingly cooler steam vapours and in the zone 3e they are further cooled by water sprays. The sprayer 15 is supplied with cold water which may be cooled by being passed over cold brine. The water from the sprayer 15 is collected in a vessel 19 and fed by a pump 22 through pipe 27 to sprayer 14. The pipe 27 is provided with a filter 23. The water from the sprayer 14 is similarly collected and pumped to the sprayer 13, which in turn supplies water to the sprayer 12. The water falling from the sprayers 12 ... 15 is thus at temperatures decreasing towards the zone 3f. The temperature of the sprayers may be adjusted by steam supplied through nozzles 24. Sterile cold fresh air may be blown through an opening 38 and removed through an opening 39.
