557,348. Heat treating rosin; distilling. HERCULES POWDER CO. Sept. 15, 1941, No. 11807. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1940. [Classes 32 and 95] A method for the continuous heat treatment of rosin includes continuously flowing molten rosin, without causing distillation thereof, into a heating zone maintained at a temperature sufficient to heat the rosin to a temperature within the range 250‹ - 350‹ C, then continuously flowing the heated rosin into a second heating zone maintained at a temperature within the range 250‹-350‹C, holding the rosin in said second heating zone at the aforesaid temperature until its characteristics have been substantially altered while simultaneously removing the small amount of volatile products formed in the second heating zone, and then continuously flowing the heated rosin into a cooling zone and continuously discharging heat-treated rosin from said cooling zone. Heating of the rosin in the second zone should preferably be for a time sufficient to eliminate its property of forming an acid abietate salt on treatment with alkali, but insufficient to change its crystallizing character. An apparatus, suitable for carrying out the method, comprises a pump 11 for pumping molten rosin into the heat exchanger 13. Rosin, heated to 250‹-350‹ C. leaves 13 and enters the heat treating vessel 14 provided with internal baffles, and maintained at 250‹-350‹ C. Volatile matter is condensed at 22, and the heat-treated rosin is run off through one of the valves 15-21, and is cooled in the heat-exchanger 12. Specification 298,214, [Class 95], is referred to.
