Abstract

In a continuous process for the treatment of waxy crude petroleum oils to render them more pumpable at temperatures below their normal pour points, the oil is first heated to a temperature at which all the wax is in solution in the oil and then the heated oil is cooled to a temperature not substantially below 50 DEG F. to reprecipitate the wax, the oil being cooled over at least a major part of the temperature range within which the wax is precipitating under conditions of substantially laminar flow and at an overall cooling rate of from 2.5 DEG to 10 DEG F. per minute. The preferred cooling rate is 5 DEG to 10 DEG F./min. The cooling may be carried out in a vertical tubular heat exchanger.
