Abstract
The tendency of a residual fuel oil to deposit a waxy sludge on storage is reduced by chilling the oil from at least 110 DEG F., preferably at least 140 DEG F., to a temperature not higher than 90 DEG F., preferably not higher than 70 DEG F., at a rate of at least 0.1 DEG F. per minute, preferably at least 1 DEG F. per minute. The oil may be chilled by passing it through heat exchange equipment cooled by a flow of cold water. Examples are given.
