Abstract
Crude petroleum oil is treated to reduce its tendency to deposit a wax-containing sludge on storage by heating the oil from a temperature below 100 DEG F. and preferably not higher than 70 DEG C. to an "elevated temperature," which is defined as a temperature which if the oil be heated from a temperature below 100 DEG C. and then cooled, considerably less sludge is deposited on storage than if the oil had not been heated. There is an optimum "elevated temperature" for any particular crude oil and a method of determining such optimum temperature is described. The crude oil may come directly from an oil well and must first be cooled to a temperature below 100 DEG F. Paraffin and paraffinicasphaltic oils may be treated.
