Abstract

Petroleum and its products are separated into paraffinic and naphthenic fractions by one or more extractions with aromatic cyanides or mixtures thereof; the naphthenic compounds are the more soluble. Dewaxing may precede or follow extraction. For example, 100 litres of Gulf coast crude distillate of s.g. 0,9303 is dissolved in 100 litres of benzonitrile by warming to 25 DEG C.; the solution is separated into two layers by cooling to 10 DEG C. and standing; the layers are isolated, and freed from benzonitrile by vacuum distillation. The production from mixed base crude of lubricating stock of viscosity 150 secs. or more Saybolt at 210 DEG F. and a s.g. of 0,910 or less is especially referred to.
