Abstract

705,083. Refrigerators; cooling milk. GASCOIGNES (READING), Ltd. June 17, 1952 [June 22, 1951], No. 14879/51. Classes 29 and 64(3) Ice is formed on evaporator coils 2 in a water tank 1 to act as a cold accumulator and part of the chilled water withdrawn by a pump 9 is forced through jets 11 directed towards the coils 2 to agitate the water in tanks 1 and so increase the heat transfer between the water and the ice. Churns 4 stand on a grating 3 and the remainder of the water withdrawn by pump 9 flows through pipes 17, 18 and cocks 19 to cooling heads, Fig. 3, for the churns. Each head comprises an annular chamber 26 fed through one or more pipes 29 connected to pipe 18, the water overflowing through openings 28 into a peripheral gutter 24 from which it flows through openings 25 down the churn walls back to the tank 1. A lid 5 having stays 6 can be folded down over the tank 1 to conserve cold during the cold-accumulating period. In modifications, a cabinet may be positioned over the tank 1 and have doors for insertion of the churns, in which case the cooling heads are not used but the chilled water is used in a surface cooler for the milk. Alternatively, a surface cooler and the cooling heads may be connected in series.
