Abstract
1367213 Thermal treatment of liquids WIEGAND KARLSRUHE GmbH 15 Sept 1972 [23 Sept 1971] 42922/72 Heading A2D A method for the degassing and thermal treatment of a liquid, particularly milk, comprises first heating the liquid in a lower temperature range by contact with a heat-supplying surface, then heating to a higher temperature range in at least one heating stage by the introduction of vapour of said liquid from a subsequent cooling stage, further heating to a maximum temperature by the introduction of pressurised steam, the liquid then being cooled by expansion, the vapour so produced in the cooling step being introduced into the at least one heating stage. The lower temperature range preferably has an upper limit of 40‹C. After the high-level heating, the liquid is preferably cooled in at least three decompression stages and is homogenised before the third temperature drop, which is down to 40‹C. The method may be carried out in the apparatus shown in the accompanying figure, wherein liquid to be treated is intially pumped through a succession of surface heaters 2, 3 and 4. Heaters 2 and 4 utilise the heat from vapours 5, recycled through lines 24 and 18 respectively, wheras heater 3 utilises steam. The preheated liquid is then passed to mixed preheaters 8 and 10 for further heating by direct contact with vapours recycled via lines 15 and 17. The liquid then passes to a high temperature heater 12 which uses steam as a heating medium. From heater 12, the liquid is passed to a series of decompression chambers 14, 16 and 21. The liquid is cooled in these chambers, and the vapours evolved during the decompression steps are recycled as previously indicated. A homogeniser 20 is positioned between decompression chambers 16 and 21. A condenser 23 condenses the portion of the vapours from chamber 21 that will not be recycled to preheater 2.
