[Class 49.] Liquids in containers are pasteurized by passing the containers successively through a preheating, a pasteurizing and a cooling zone, a liquid being circulated through these zones in the direction opposite to that of the containers, by introducing cooling liquid into the cooling zone at a rate sufficiently high to cool rapidly the pasteurized liquid, discharging a portion of the cooling liquid and passing the remainder through the pasteurizing and preheating zones. The liquid is placed in bottles which are inserted in carriers 12 secured to a chain 11 which traverses the treatment tank. The latter has vertical partitions 5, 8, 9, 6, and the bottles are carried by the conveying chain 11 through the tank past the partitions. The cooling liquid, which may be water, is fed to the tank through a spray pipe 13, part of this water being finally withdrawn through pipes 15, 16, having an air vent 18, an excess flow of cold water and a rapid cooling of the bottles in the cooling zone being thus provided. The remainder of the water passes to the pasteurization zone, between partitions 8, 9, where it is heated to pasteurization temperature by steam pipes 10. The water overflows from the tank through pipe 14 after having preheated the bottles in the zone between partition 8 and the end wall 1 of the tank. The supply and removal of water to the cooling zone are controlled by valves 19, 17. The bottles are inverted in passing over the chain-carrying wheels in the tank, causing uniform heating of the contents.
