Abstract

In the process of producing a firmly adherent, corrosion-preventing, protective coating upon pure or alloyed light metals, by the known "fat-bronzing" method, the burning-in of the thinly-applied vegetable or animal fat or oil is carried out immediately after its application, and at a temperature of about 270--380 DEG C., in a reaction time amounting to at most 10 minutes. By this means a uniform coating, free from streaks or spots, is obtained. In the case of thin foils, e.g. of aluminium, they are coated with the fat or oil and then immediately placed in a space, heated to 270--380 DEG C., for a few minutes. When thicker metal is used, it should be heated to 270--380 DEG C., before the application of the fat or oil, and the burning-in temperature may be maintained by introducing the work-piece into a muffle, or by means of hot air. If the metal is sufficiently thick, the burning-in temperature is maintained without further external heat supply. It is desirable to cool the work-piece rapidly at the conclusion of the burning-in process. The fat or oil used may be mixed with a volatile diluent, and may be previously polymerized.
