Abstract
An alloy consisting essentially of copper, nickel, aluminium, and manganese, having an aluminium content of 0,5-5 per cent, preferably 1-3 per cent, a nickel content of 1,5-15 per cent and equal to about 3-4 times the aluminium content, and a manganese content of 0,5-15 per cent is hardened by rapid cooling from a temperature of the order of 900 DEG C. followed by reheating at about 300-600 DEG C. The treated alloys are stated to retain their strength and hardness at relatively high temperatures. The alloy may be subjected to cold working after the rapid cooling and prior to the reheating. A locomotive fire-box may be made from an alloy containing 87,5 per cent copper, 5 per cent manganese, 6 per cent nickel, and 1,5 per cent aluminium, the fire box being made after the alloy has been quenched from 900 DEG C., and reheating for about 2 hours at 500-600 DEG C. being effected when the fire-box has reached or almost reached its final stage of fabrication. According to the first Provisional Specification the alloy may also contain zinc and the nickel content need not be as high as 3-4 times the aluminium content. Specifications 200,961, [Class 82 (i)], 386,017 and 402,796 are referred to.
