Abstract
In a process of working precipitation hardening aluminium base alloys which after treatment exhibit a lamellar structure, the alloy after the initial working and prior to the final hot working operation is subjected to a solution treatment at 454 to 593 DEG C. and immediately thereafter to an intermediate thermal treatment at 343 to 399 DEG C. to precipitate a major proportion of the soluble constituents and then cooling to room temperature. The cooling to the intermediate temperature may be at a rate not exceeding 33 DEG C. per hour and to room temperature at an uncontrolled rate. The preferred treatment is a solution treatment at 482-510 DEG C. for 4 to 30 hours, cooling at 14 DEG C. per hour to 371 to 388 and soaking within this range for 8 to 16 hours. This treatment may take place at any stage after the initial working and prior to the final hot working and precipitation hardening, e.g. it may follow extrusion and preceed forging. Suitable alloys are those containing 1-12 per cent Cu, 1-14 per cent Si, 0-16 per cent Mg, 0-10 per cent Zn, the remainder being Al.
