Abstract
In the heat treatment of aluminium alloys, the alloys after a solution treatment are aged by heating them to 190-250 DEG C. and controlling the initial cooling down to a temperature not less than 90 DEG C. so that this cooling takes place gradually in a prearranged time. The temperature may fall in steps or stages, or continuously. In an example, an alloy containing 1,5 per cent of copper, 3 per cent of silicon, 0,25 per cent of magnesium, 1 per cent of nickel, 1,2 per cent of iron, 0,2 per cent of titanium and the remainder aluminium, was given a solution treatment by heating for 3 hours at 530 DEG C. and quenched and then aged by heating to 200 DEG C. and allowing the temperature to fall to 170 DEG C. in the first hour, 155 DEG C. in the second hour, and 140 DEG C. in the third hour. The subsequent cooling may be effected in any desired manner.
