Abstract
Beryllium-aluminium alloys containing 6-94 per cent of aluminium are heat-treated by heating the alloy to or about the temperature at which the matrix crystals of the alloy normally become substantially equiaxed while maintaining a pressure on the alloy which is sufficiently high to prevent substantial sweating of the eutectic. The alloy may be heated in a gas such as helium at a pressure of approximately 150 lbs. per sq. in. to a temperature of 1250-1350 DEG F. Before the heat treatment the alloy is heated to 1000-1050 DEG F., reduced by 25-50 per cent by a flat pressing operation, and then rolled at about the same temperature. After the heat treatment the alloy is cold-rolled and may be further rolled at a temperature not exceeding 1000 DEG F. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the treatment was applied to alloys in general, but this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
