Abstract

A process for coating a ferrous metal base with a protective metallic coating that consists in heating the base metal to a temperature slightly above the melting temperature of the coating metal in an atmosphere of hydrogen, and then immersing the said base metal in a bath of coating metal while still in the said gaseous atmosphere, said base metal temperature being maintained constant at a point higher than the melting point of the said coating metal after it has left the bath, thus forming a smooth, continuous, firmly adhering coating on the said base metal. About 1 per cent of another element adapted to alloy with the coating metal and the base metal may be added to the coating bath. The Specification refers to the coating of iron with silver by the said process in which iron is heated to about 1000 DEG C. in a hydrogen atmosphere prior to coating in a bath consisting of silver or of 99 per cent of silver and 1 per cent of a copper phosphorus alloy. Iron or stainless steel wire may be coated with copper by heating the iron to about 1150 DEG C. in a hydrogen atmosphere and immersing in a bath consisting of copper or of 99 per cent of copper and 1 per cent nickel. Stainless steel wire may be coated with silver by the said process by heating the wire to about 1000 DEG C. in hydrogen and immersing it in a molten bath consisting of 99 per cent of silver and 1 per cent of a copper phosphorus alloy. In each case the stated base metal temperatures are maintained during coating and after the base metal has left the coating bath.
