Abstract

A method of reducing the nitrogen content of iron or ferrous alloy articles comprises coating the article with a layer of a nitrogen-accepting metal and annealing the article under such conditions that some or all of the nitrogen enters, and is retained by, the coating but prevents diffusion of the coating metal into the article. The coating layer may be removed after cooling. The coating metal may be Al, Cr, Ta, Ti, or V and may be applied electrolytically or by vapour deposition to a thickness depending on the thickness of the article and the desired reduction in nitrogen content. The annealing may comprise heating to 400 DEG C. to 800 DEG C. for two hours followed by cooling at a rate less than 100 DEG C. per hour. The coating metal may be applied prior to any mechanical working before annealing. Curves are given for Al coated on iron and show the relationship between the nitrogen content of the base and the thickness of coating on each side, and between the annealing time and the temperature.
