Abstract
A process for producing thin metal coated steel strip comprises cold reducing hot rolled strip in two stages giving at least 70% and then 10% reductions, continuously annealing the strip, and giving it a metallic coating. For producing very thin tin plate, hot rolled strip is reduced in a 4 or 5 stand tandem mill and then in a 2 or 3 stand tandem mill. The strip is cleaned and passed through a continuous annealing line employing a lead-bismuth or other high temperature bath at a temperature above A3 point to give the strip a hardness of greater than 67R. 30T on the Rockwell Scale. The strip is rapidly cooled to 250 DEG C. and coiled. The cooled strip is then passed through a temper mill, to give at least 10% reduction, and finally to a tinning line. For producing conventional tinplate of 0.0077 inch and above the 2nd cold rolling step is missed out and the annealing produces a hardness of 60R. 30T. Finally the strip is over aged, given a temper pass, and tinned.
