Abstract
1,104,500. Rolling; making wire. CONTINENTAL TITANIUM METALS CORPORATION G.m.b.H. 22 July, 1966 [26 July, 1965], No. 33109/66. Headings B3A and B3M. Wire of commercial pure titanium, or of an alpha or alpha-beta type titanium base alloy, which has been hot-worked at a temperature below its beta transes temperature is rapidly heated and cooled during a total period of not greater than 1 minute, and is then reduced in cross-section by cold rolling the wire between a set of rolls 18 whose grooves 20 co-operate to form a circular pass. The wire is heated to a temperature preferably not more than 50‹ F. above its beta transes temperature. In the case of pure titanium wire, the total time for heating and for holding the wire at that temperature can take one hour. The wire, after uncoiling, is fed through a heater 6 where it is resistance heated using rollers 8 and 10, or is alternatively heated inductively. An air blast 14 cools the wire, and a bull block 22 finally pulls the wire through a set of rolls 18, or preferably two such sets in tandem.
