Abstract
1,172,748. Altering physical structure. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 6 Dec., 1967 [13 Feb,. 1967], No. 55464/67. Heading B3V. [Also in Division C7] An iron-rhodium alloy exhibiting magnetic transition on heating is formed by hot and cold reducing the alloy to required final dimensions to form a disordered F.C.C. structure, after which the alloy is heat treated at a temperature not less than 235 C. to produce an ordered B.C.C. structure. In an embodiment, an ironrhodium ingot is vacuum annealed at 850- 1000 C., e.g. 975 C. for 26 hrs., and hot worked at 850-1000 C. from 0À3 inch to 25 or 50 mils, followed by cold rolling to 10 mils, the alloy being annealed at 950 C. between the cold rolling stages. After heat treating at 1000 C., the alloy exhibited an abrupt non- magnetic to magnetic change at about 57 C. A more gradual magnetic transition may be produced by cold working the alloy by up to 50% in thickness after the final heat treatment. The alloy may contain additional alloying elements and may have a composition as disclosed in U.S.A. Specifications 3,144,324 and 3,144,325.
