Abstract

Metal articles such as sheets or strip are subjected to a slight oxidation treatment before being electroplated with tin or a tin alloy and after plating are heated above the melting point of the coating metal. The oxidation should preferably be such as to form not more than 0,02 gram-molecules of oxidation products per sq. metre, the surface of the basis metal showing no visible alteration. The oxidation may be effected by chemical treatment with oxidizing agents such as chromic acid, chromates or dichromates, permanganates or peroxides. Fused oxidizing agents may be employed. Oxidation may also be effected by heating in air or an oxide of nitrogen.
