Abstract

Articles formed of a metal or an alloy of metals of the group aluminium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, niobium, silicon, titanium, tungsten, tantalum, vanadium, zirconium and boron, are first chromized by diffusing chromium into the surface thereof by any method in which the article is brought into intimate contact with gaseous chromium or a chromium compound at elevated temperature, and then coated with a superficial layer of aluminium which is submitted to an oxidizing process under conditions resulting in partial oxidation of the aluminium and partial alloying thereof with the surface metal of the article. The aluminium may be applied in the form of paint, by spraying or by heating in contact with powdered aluminium and aluminium oxide, and oxidation and alloying may be effected by heating in air at 800 DEG C for 30 minutes. In examples, after coating with aluminium, articles are heated in air for 8 hours at 1150 DEG C and for 24 hours at 1200 DEG C. Specification 633,701 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
