Abstract

In a method of forming, on a solid metal body consisting of iron, nickel or cobalt or an alloy of one or more of these metals, a superficial alloy consisting of the metal of the body with an additional metal consisting of chromium with or without aluminium, zirconium or silicon, wherein a cementation product, i.e. a product in the solid or liquid state capable, under the action of heat thereon, of giving off vapours of the fluoride of the additional metal, is heated to form such vapours, and such vapours are brought, as they are formed, into contact with the body without allowing the cementation product to be in contact with the body, a least 80% by weight of the cementation product is constituted by chromium fluoride and the cementation product contains no free chromium. The cementation product may consist of commercial chromium fluoride with (a) 5% by weight of ammonium fluoride, or (b) 10% by weight of hydrofluoric acid and 10% by weight of ammonium fluoride; alternatively, it may contain a chromium halide which is not a fluoride. To form a superficial alloy containing aluminium, zirconium or silicon, alumina, zirconia or silica is added to the cementation product. A mass of additional metal may be placed in the chamber in which treatment is effected and this mass, which is out of contact with the cementation product, may be in contact with the body or may be separated therefrom by a metallic network which surrounds the body.
