Abstract

Before coating with aluminium or an aluminium-base alloy by hot-dipping, iron and steel articles are painted with a solution containing one or more alkali metal compounds, the resulting film is dried and the articles then heat-treated in a reducing atmosphere. Specified alkali metal compounds are sodium and potassium fluoride and hydroxide and sodium azide. The solution, which may be aqueous or in ethyl alcohol, may also contain sodium or potassium chloride or aluminium fluoride, and a surface-active agent. Drying is preferably effected at above 400 DEG C., this heating serving also to burn off any adhering oil or fat. The reducing heat-treatment is performed at above 600 DEG C. in e.g. hydrogen. Coating may be effected with aluminium alloys containing silicon, lead, titanium or cerium. Specification 647,652 is referred to.
