Abstract

A fused salt bath for the heat-treatment of high-speed steels and hot-die steels comprises alkaline-earth metal halide and 0.25-5 per cent of a regenerator which is magnesium borate with or without silicon and/or silica. The bath may also contain up to 5 per cent of alkali metal halide such as chloride or fluoride. The alkaline-earth metal halide disclosed is barium chloride, and the magnesium borate may be the ortho-, meta- or pyro-compound.
