Abstract

A flux, suitable for the treatment of magnesium base and aluminium base alloys containing rare earth metals, is substantially free from magnesium chloride and consists of at least two chlorides of the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, other than magnesium, these chlorides in the absence of inspissating agents having a liquidus temperature not greater than 610 DEG C, the flux also containing sufficient of one or more inspissating agents to enable the flux to provide a pasty, viscous covering on the molten metal, the total chlorides in the flux comprising less than 25 per cent of barium chloride, if any, or the equivalent of strontium chloride or strontium chloride and barium chloride reckoning 1 per cent of strontium chloride equivalent to 0.7 per cent of barium chloride. In a preferred composition the chlorides consist of 40-70 per cent calcium chloride, 6-30 per cent potassium chloride and 24-40 per cent sodium chloride. Specification 652,234 is referred to.
