Abstract

Magnesium base alloys containing zirconium are melted in crucibles and the alloys are protected against oxidation by a flux consisting of at least two chlorides of the group consisting of the chlorides of alkali and alkaline earth metals including magnesium, the flux containing not less than 25 per cent of barium chloride or 35 per cent of strontium chloride or a mixture of barium and strontium chlorides equivalent to not less than 25 per cent barium chloride reckoning 1 per cent strontium chloride equivalent to 0.7 per cent barium chloride. The flux does not contain more than 5 per cent if any of inspissating agents including inert metallic oxides and has a specific gravity of at least 2.05 at 800 DEG C., the liquidus temperature of the flux as a whole being not greater than 610 DEG C. The flux may contain at least 20 per cent of magnesium chloride and up to 5 per cent of one or more of the fluorides of potassium, sodium, barium, strontium, calcium and magnesium or it may be free from magnesium chloride and contain up to 5 per cent of magnesium fluoride. Specifications 511,137, 539,023, 539,024, 652,224, 652,226, 652,227 and 652,234 are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also the treatment of magnesium, magnesium base alloys and aluminium base alloys containing magnesium.
