Abstract

A flux suitable for use in melting and refining light metals having a composition by weight in the following range: MgCl2 30-36 per cent. CaCl2 over 16 per cent. and less than 25 per cent. NaCl up to 15 per cent. KCl up to 15 per cent. MgO 0-15 per cent. CaF2 12-22 per cent. other materials (other halides not reducible by molten magnesium, inert oxides and carbon) up to 20 per cent. and not including more than 5 per cent. of halides, the sodium chloride and potassium chloride together being between 10 and 25 per cent and the calcium fluoride and magnesium oxide together being between 18 and 32 per cent. Calcium fluoride may be replaced wholly or partly by an approximately chemically equivalent proportion of one or more fluorides of alkali metals, alkali earth metals and magnesium, the fluoride or fluorides not exceeding 22 per cent. in total.
