Abstract
A flux for use in welding zinc, particularly by gas fusion welding, contains 50-70 per cent of ammonium chloride, the remainder being a mixture of alkali compounds and zinc chloride in relative proportions between 1 : 2 and 1 : 8. As alkali compounds one or more of the chlorides, fluorides, carbonates, and sulphates of sodium, potassium, lithium, rubidium, and caesium may be used. A preferred flux consists of 65 per cent of ammonium chloride, 25 of zinc chloride, 4 of sodium chloride, 3 of lithium chloride and 3 of potassium fluoride. The flux components may be mixed by fusion. Both sides of the welding place are sprinkled with the powdered flux or painted with an aqueous solution or suspension thereof, and, if desired, the welding wire may be provided with a coating of the flux. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a flux in which, instead of the mixture of ammonium chloride and zinc chloride, corresponding complex compounds such as the zinc-ammonium chloride of the formula ZnCl213NH3 are used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
